Spring Term 2018

On Wednesday 21st February Willow class had a special treat. A dance coach from the school sports partnership came into school and worked with the class to improve their dance skills! They tried 4 different dances. They gained skills in line dancing, rock and roll, cheerleading and finished with some Bollywood dancing! The children really impressed the coach, had lots of fun while they tried and learned new skills and had some fantastic moves.

On Monday 5th February Willow class visited a gymnastics festival  at Sherburn Sports Centre which had been organised by the Sports Partnership.  The children were there all morning and had the chance to try out lots of different gymnastic skills such as trampolining and balancing on the beam. They behaved impeccably and showed lots of determination.

The children all tried their best and had a fantastic time! We were even lucky enough to see some of the coaches perform some tumbling for us to see. They were amazing!!

Autumn Term 2017

Willow visit Enchanted Christmas

On Monday the children visited Enchanted Christmas at Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield. The children had an amazing time! We started with a frosty walk through the park to get to the cosy tipis. First the children went for a walk in the elf wood and found the silly Grinch!  The children laughed and sang songs even though he was a little scary at first!

The children then went to visit Santa. He spoke to them all personally and they received a lovely gift of a reindeer cuddly toy in a drawstring bag. They had their photos taken and loved every minute.

After that, the children then had a great time in the elf silent disco where they got their own headphones and had a boogie around the disco tipi. They went to see elf postmaster snowball and wrote special letters and posted them to the North Pole and then finally made their very own glass snow globe to take home!

We loved our frosty day out and we all came home excited for Christmas!

Earlier on this term we made Mardi Gras masks as part of our celebrations topic. We looked at how the people dress up to celebrate and how brightly coloured the masks were. We designed them and talked about the materials we would need to make them.

We used acrylic paints to create a base colour and then pens to create more intricate designs.

After a health and safety talk we used a cool melt gun to attach feathers, beads and glitter to our designs which we really enjoyed.

We hope you like our designs as much as we do!

Remembrance Sunday

This week in Willow class as part of our topic ‘Festivals and Celebrations’, we spent some time learning about Remembrance Day. The children asked lots of questions and we talked about why we have Remembrance Sunday. We read poetry and watched videos where we listened to veterans talking about their experiences in the war. We discussed the different memorials around the country such as the cenotaph as well as the memorial in Sherburn Village. We also talked about how the poppy is a symbol to help us remember and how it was chosen.

In our topic lesson we made our own paper poppies and used it to create our own memorial. Some children chose a more difficult folded design to create their poppy, using different joining techniques to create folds and creases. Some children preferred a more crinkled design. We put all of our poppies together and made a class wreath which is displayed on our class door.

We also walked down to the village memorial. We laid a class cross and we also laid one of our poppy wreaths we made in class. We stood silent for one minute to remember the soldiers who gave their lives and said a prayer.

Willow class will remember.

In the past
We’d love to hear about your memories! You could even come in and speak to the children and tell them your stories!
This half term we will be looking at life in the past. We will start by learning about Queen Victoria and who she was.

We will be talking about how life was different for children and adults in the Victorian times and growing up through the 1950s. We will be investigating artefacts and photographs from those times and learning about how these things tell us about the past.
We will also be visiting Beamish museum and taking part in a workshop about the Victorian classroom where the children will get a taste of what is was really like back then! We will be looking at food through the ages and even trying an afternoon tea as well as spam sandwiches straight from the 1950s lunchbox!

In Art and DT we will be talking about colour mixing, the work of Andy Warhol and creating our own pop art portraits. We will be studying Victorian prints and how portraits have changed over the years.
Homework will be given on a Friday to return the following Thursday.

Could you please read with your children 3 times a week as it will ensure the children are receiving the support they need for their phonics and English work.
