British Values at Sherburn Primary School

Since September 2014 all schools have had a statutory duty to promote British values and to ensure that they are taught through the school curriculum. British values include:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Equality of opportunity
  • Freedom of speech
  • Individual liberty and mutual respect
  • Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

At Sherburn Primary School we take our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain very seriously. We value the ethnic backgrounds of all of our pupils and celebrate and explore these alongside other cultures in our country. For example, we have learnt about Diwali and Chinese New Year in school assemblies and have celebrated these events in class through a variety of activities.

We ensure that the fundamental British values are introduced, discussed and modelled through the ethos and work of the school. Our curriculum provides opportunities to deepen and strengthen understanding developing the spiritual, moral, social and cultural education of our children.

All pupils are involved in developing their own class rules. Whole school assemblies are based upon different values each month, to help children understand and embrace our values and aims. This developing values based understanding from the minute they start school, provides children with the platform for embracing difference and striving to achieve their own goals.

We value pupil voice and promote the democratic process for example by having a school council, whose members are elected by their peers. Children’s ideas are planned and discussed during school council meetings – all points of view are valued.

Children are given responsibility as Eco-Team members, Sports and Playground Leaders and E-Cadets to run activities so they are fully involved in all aspects of school life.  Older children are also librarians and classroom monitors, helping to promote our core values and high expectations of behaviour.

Our duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism through the Prevent Strategy means that any opposition to these fundamental British Values is not tolerated at Sherburn Primary School.
