Year 1 Ladybird Class
Welcome, Ladybird Class is a mixed class of year 1 and 2 children. The class teacher is Mrs Lightowler supported by Miss Pinkerton and Mrs Crisp.
In Ladybird class, the children will develop to work with greater stamina, resilience and independence encouraged by a wide range of stimulating curriculum opportunities and play. We endeavour to inspire and nurture our children through fun and engaging tasks. We celebrate our achievements in and out of school, encouraging one another to always do our best. Reading
Your child will bring home 2 reading books. Please could you aim to read with your child at least 4 times a week. Every night they read, they will receive a star on their bookmark. Once filled the children win a dip in our prize box. Children may also choose to borrow a book from our school library.
Phonics
At Sherburn Primary we follow the Little Wandle Scheme. The children read everyday in class with books which are phonetically matched to your child’s progress.
More information can be found here by clicking this link.
Supporting your child with reading
Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.
There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:
A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.
A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.
Reading practice book
This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.
Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
Sharing book
In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.
Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

P.E.
P.E. is on a Tuesday and a Friday. The children need to attend school wearing their PE kit (including warm black tracksuit/jogger bottoms) and appropriate shoes as it will be outdoors at times.
Could you please provide a pair of wellies as we often go outside to support our lessons. We also take part in Forest School Sessions, therefore it is useful for your child to have a pair of jogging bottoms and thick socks at school too.
Please ensure all clothing is clearly marked with your child’s name.
Homework
Homework will be handed out on a Thursday and needs to be returned on a Wednesday.
